REVIEW:
Sixth in the series and the fifth to feature the character of Michael Myers. It has been six years since both Michael and Jamie disappeared from Haddonfield's Police Station. Now, in 1995, the kids of Haddonfield want to have parties on Halloween Night again after their parents have banned it since the incidents of 1988 (H4) and 1989 (H5). Meanwhile, Jamie has been raped by a cult but manages to escape with her new-born baby. But Michael in hot pursuit. The Strode family has moved into the Myers' house, in an attempt to break the curse and to finally sell the house. But daughter Kara Strode has problems with her son, Danny Strode who is haunted by the Man in Black (from H5). Help is at hand though from not only Dr. Loomis but also from an unexpected source, Tommy Doyle (one of the two child survivors from H1). Tommy has grown up and has researched into Michael's madness and he might have the answer...
Same synopsis above for a different review of the “same” movie. What is wrong with you? Well, that is still the plot of this film...but what this film is, is something totally different. When they made this movie, the gave director Joe Chappelle final cut from my understanding, and he went with what we all saw. And this version went unnoticed. Well, not exactly. This movie was one of the most traded bootlegs at horror conventions. Everyone had to see what the actual intent for this movie was...and I can tell you this. I owned my fair share of these bootlegs...and am nostalgic about that fact. But that's right boils and ghouls. With the release of the complete collection Blu-ray box set...this film has gotten its first official release. The went back and remastered the negative to give the fans what they've been asking for, for over ten years. And yes folks...it is a totally different movie.
I'm not going to go into explicit details as to what the changes are, because that isn't fair...plus if you want to know...just Google Halloween Producer's Cut and you'll find everything you want to know. But this film as a completely different vibe to it. For one, for all you gore-hounds out there, you are going to be disappointed...there is very little actual gore in this movie. The theatrical cut went over the top...and this version dials it all the way back to two.
We are given a lot more information into the druid cult, and the man in black himself. As well as, much more of Danny hearing the voices. Just solidifying more, that he is the next one being targeted. Donald Pleasence has a larger role, and a role in the end that took everyone by surprise when the photos first surfaced. This is an amazing plot twist, that I wish I could tell you.
Granted, the ruins stuff was a little over the top. Like the fact that they could stop Michael in his tracks by laying these ruins at his feet. That is a low point in this one I must say.
Jamie Lloyd sticks around a little longer in this film, which actually gives reason for Loomis and Wynn being at the hospital when Tommy arrives. It just closes up a lot of loose ends, that had viewers scratching their heads in the original theatrical release.
This film has it all murder, cults, conspiracy, mystery, and yes, even incest. That one took me by surprise a bit. But it was such a joy the first time I saw this cut, to see the version of the movie that I wanted to see the first time around. The fact that it took damn near 20 years before this got an actual release is beyond me. I think it was because ownership was holding it up. No one actually knew you owned the rights to this cut. But that is all over now. We all can own it, and revel in the joy that is Halloween: The Origins of Michael Myers.
I love this movie. Highest of recommends.
