REVIEW:
Fifth in the Halloween series and the fourth to feature the character of Michael Myers. It is close to Halloween 1989 and Jamie (the heroine of H4) is in Haddonfield's Children's Hospital after attacking her step-mother the previous year. She is being treated by Dr. Loomis with the aid of her step-sister Rachel and Rachel's friend Tina. She hasn't said a word since the attack but to her horror discovers that she has a mind-link to her murdering uncle, Michael who has spent the year recovering from his wounds in a coma and awakes to go after Jamie again. His plan is to lure Jamie out of the hospital by going after Tina (who is going to a Halloween party) and by murdering Rachel. Jamie knows that she must leave the hospital to save herself and with the aid of Dr. Loomis sets out to defeat Michael on his own home ground - The Myers house...
Halloween 5 came out almost exactly a year after the previous film. This is a perfect example of rushing a project because of the success of the last film. Because not only did they rush into development on this film, but they changed the writer and director...so when you leave a film on a cliff hanger like the last film, you should bring those people back. Because this film goes in a TOTALLY different direction than I originally thought that it would. Which isn't always a bad thing. But in this case...it really isn't a good thing.
First, Jamie attacked her foster mother in the last film, which left viewers astonished...but how does she deal with this...well, apparently she goes mute. Why have a lead in a HORROR film mute. She can't even scream...she just gasps a lot. But hey, she doesn't stay mute for long at least. Somewhere near the end of the film, she finds the ability to speak, and leaves her comfy hospital to head into danger....where Uncle Michael can find her. How convenient.
And let's not forget to mention Rachel...the second survivor from the terror last time...yup you guessed it...she gets taken out in the first 10 minutes of the movie; in a very shitty death if you ask me. Because the actress, Ellie Cornell, didn't like the way her character died in the original screenplay, they changed her death entirely. Listen people...don't let actors dictate your movie. Let them go make their own movie if they want any creative input. She was getting paid to die...so sit down, shut the fuck up, and get killed. Bottom line.
So, with Rachel no longer around...how do they decide to fill that gap. With the character of Tina. Why did they do this to us...WHY GOD. I ASK YOU WHY!!! Tina is one of the most annoying characters I think, that has ever been committed to celluloid. I understand the need for annoying characters...but their goal is to annoy the other characters in the movie...not the fuckin' audience. All they managed to do, was make a character that I, personally, was rooting for to die. And hell, maybe that's what they were going for in this case...only they know for sure.
All the other new characters in this film, are just about as useless as Tina is. They are only around to give Michael a body count to pick off, one at a time. Which isn't a bad thing, I just look for a little more creativity in my characters. And there is absolutely none in any of these characters.
That leaves Donal Pleasence...once again, he returns as Dr. Sam Loomis. This time he is more of the look out for Jamie. Because he “knows” there is some link between her and Michael, and her want (needs) her to help him. He does seem a little more “ape-shit” crazy in this film. I mean, he is almost overtly violent with young Jamie. So much to the point where I almost didn't like him in this film. And that is a terrible choice to make...he is supposed to be the “hero”. Sure, make him obsessive, and make him forceful. But don't turn him into the, “do anything to make it happen”, type of guy. I mean this is the guy we are supposed to be rooting for. And sure, some of you sick, twisted fucks out there might be rooting him to beat on Jamie...but us normal viewers will be taken aback by this.
Loomis always has had a skewed view when it came to Michael Myers, but when we get to the end, and he is basically holding Jamie hostage, and offers her up to Michael...it's like, WHAT THE FUCK. Sure, it is all a ploy in the end, but it is not necessary to anything going on.
And this time around, instead of Michael being “killed” off, they arrest him. Really...arrest Michael Myers. GIVE ME A BREAK. But once again, this is all a ploy. All throughout the movie, you are teased with images of this “man in black”, but it never seems to really be going anywhere. But...no image is unused, because guess you shows up with a machine to kill all the cops in the station, and break Michael Myers out of jail. Yup...the man in black. I hated this when I first saw it, because I thought it was ridiculous as hell. But at least they use that in the film that follows, which was a breath of fresh are.
All in all, Halloween 5: The Revenge of Michael Myers isn't a good movie at all. But it is at least an entertaining film for horror fans. But the franchise is starting to go down a very rocky path...and the question is...can they redeem themselves? Or is it going keep going down the shit heap? Well, I recommend the movie or horror fans..because like so many other films...this is a good horror movie, but it is a terrible Halloween sequel.
